WIKILEAKS deserves protection, not threats and attacks.
IN 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide's The News, wrote: "In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that truth will always win."
His observation perhaps reflected his father Keith Murdoch's expose that Australian troops were being needlessly sacrificed by incompetent British commanders on the shores of Gallipoli. The British tried to shut him up but Keith Murdoch would not be silenced and his efforts led to the termination of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.
Nearly a century later, WikiLeaks is also fearlessly publishing facts that need to be made public.
I grew up in a Queensland country town where people spoke their minds bluntly. They distrusted big government as something that could be corrupted if not watched carefully. The dark days of corruption in the Queensland government before the Fitzgerald inquiry are testimony to what happens when the politicians gag the media from reporting the truth.
These things have stayed with me. WikiLeaks was created around these core values. The idea, conceived in Australia, was to use internet technologies in new ways to report the truth.
WikiLeaks coined a new type of journalism: scientific journalism. We work with other media outlets to bring people the news, but also to prove it is true. Scientific journalism allows you to read a news story, then to click online to see the original document it is based on. That way you can judge for yourself: Is the story true? Did the journalist report it accurately?
Democratic societies need a strong media and WikiLeaks is part of that media. The media helps keep government honest. WikiLeaks has revealed some hard truths about the Iraq and Afghan wars, and broken stories about corporate corruption.
People have said I am anti-war: for the record, I am not. Sometimes nations need to go to war, and there are just wars. But there is nothing more wrong than a government lying to its people about those wars, then asking these same citizens to put their lives and their taxes on the line for those lies. If a war is justified, then tell the truth and the people will decide whether to support it.
If you have read any of the Afghan or Iraq war logs, any of the US embassy cables or any of the stories about the things WikiLeaks has reported, consider how important it is for all media to be able to report these things freely.
WikiLeaks is not the only publisher of the US embassy cables. Other media outlets, including Britain's The Guardian, The New York Times, El Pais in Spain and Der Spiegel in Germany have published the same redacted cables.
Yet it is WikiLeaks, as the co-ordinator of these other groups, that has copped the most vicious attacks and accusations from the US government and its acolytes. I have been accused of treason, even though I am an Australian, not a US, citizen. There have been dozens of serious calls in the US for me to be "taken out" by US special forces. Sarah Palin says I should be "hunted down like Osama bin Laden", a Republican bill sits before the US Senate seeking to have me declared a "transnational threat" and disposed of accordingly. An adviser to the Canadian Prime Minister's office has called on national television for me to be assassinated. An American blogger has called for my 20-year-old son, here in Australia, to be kidnapped and harmed for no other reason than to get at me.
And Australians should observe with no pride the disgraceful pandering to these sentiments by Julia Gillard and her government. The powers of the Australian government appear to be fully at the disposal of the US as to whether to cancel my Australian passport, or to spy on or harass WikiLeaks supporters. The Australian Attorney-General is doing everything he can to help a US investigation clearly directed at framing Australian citizens and shipping them to the US.
Prime Minister Gillard and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have not had a word of criticism for the other media organisations. That is because The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel are old and large, while WikiLeaks is as yet young and small.
We are the underdogs. The Gillard government is trying to shoot the messenger because it doesn't want the truth revealed, including information about its own diplomatic and political dealings.
Has there been any response from the Australian government to the numerous public threats of violence against me and other WikiLeaks personnel? One might have thought an Australian prime minister would be defending her citizens against such things, but there have only been wholly unsubstantiated claims of illegality. The Prime Minister and especially the Attorney-General are meant to carry out their duties with dignity and above the fray. Rest assured, these two mean to save their own skins. They will not.
Every time WikiLeaks publishes the truth about abuses committed by US agencies, Australian politicians chant a provably false chorus with the State Department: "You'll risk lives! National security! You'll endanger troops!" Then they say there is nothing of importance in what WikiLeaks publishes. It can't be both. Which is it?
It is neither. WikiLeaks has a four-year publishing history. During that time we have changed whole governments, but not a single person, as far as anyone is aware, has been harmed. But the US, with Australian government connivance, has killed thousands in the past few months alone.
US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates admitted in a letter to the US congress that no sensitive intelligence sources or methods had been compromised by the Afghan war logs disclosure. The Pentagon stated there was no evidence the WikiLeaks reports had led to anyone being harmed in Afghanistan. NATO in Kabul told CNN it couldn't find a single person who needed protecting. The Australian Department of Defence said the same. No Australian troops or sources have been hurt by anything we have published.
But our publications have been far from unimportant. The US diplomatic cables reveal some startling facts:
► The US asked its diplomats to steal personal human material and information from UN officials and human rights groups, including DNA, fingerprints, iris scans, credit card numbers, internet passwords and ID photos, in violation of international treaties. Presumably Australian UN diplomats may be targeted, too.
► King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia asked the US to attack Iran.
► Officials in Jordan and Bahrain want Iran's nuclear program stopped by any means available.
► Britain's Iraq inquiry was fixed to protect "US interests".
► Sweden is a covert member of NATO and US intelligence sharing is kept from parliament.
► The US is playing hardball to get other countries to take freed detainees from Guantanamo Bay. Barack Obama agreed to meet the Slovenian President only if Slovenia took a prisoner. Our Pacific neighbour Kiribati was offered millions of dollars to accept detainees.
In its landmark ruling in the Pentagon Papers case, the US Supreme Court said "only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government". The swirling storm around WikiLeaks today reinforces the need to defend the right of all media to reveal the truth.

Julian Assange said today that the "insurance files" he promised to release should any harm come to him or WikiLeaks should worry more than just diplomats and government sources. "There are 504 US embassy cables on one broadcasting organization and there are cables on Murdoch and News Corp," Assange told the British paper the New Statesman. What's the connection between whistle-blowing on wartime abuses and international diplomacy and media companies? "[T]hey speak more of the same truth to power," said Assange, whose legal team is currently trying to fight extradition to Sweden by making the case that it could lead to detention in Guantanamo and eventual execution. Murdoch is a surprising new target considering just last month Assange invoked him and his history of truth telling to support WikiLeaks' mission. In an op-ed in the Australian, Assange said:
"In 1958 a young Rupert Murdoch, then owner and editor of Adelaide’s The News, wrote: 'In the race between secrecy and truth, it seems inevitable that truth will always win.'"
That wasn't the first instance of Assange's seeking umbrage in Murdoch's shadow. During his feud with the Guardian over publishing leaked information about his sex-crimes charges, Assange used an interview with the Times U.K. to attack his former allies at the Guardian. At the time, David Leigh, the Guardian's investigations editor tweeted, "The #guardian published too many leaks for #Assange 's liking, it seems. So now he's signed up 'exclusively' with #Murdoch's Times. Gosh."
As part of today's big reveal about the Murdoch cables, Assange also added that attempts to indict him should worry the mainstream press, continuing his recent emphasis on his journalistic bona fides:
"I think what's emerging in the mainstream media is the awareness that if I can be indicted, other journalists can, too," says Assange. "Even the New York Times is worried. This used not to be the case. If a whistleblower was prosecuted, publishers and reporters were protected by the First Amendment, which journalists took for granted. That's being lost."
This isn't the first time Assange has identified himself as a journalist, despite the press's attempt to distance themselves from the idea. In order to make their espionage case against Assange, the Department of Justice has also tried to discredit the notion. Assange has won awards for journalism, and in an interview with Time in July, he said, "I am a journalist and publisher and inventor." But in the past, he's also branded WikiLeaks as a whistle-blowing organization, which would place him more in the "source" camp than the "publisher" one. Regardless, it seems like an odd time to choose a media organization, even as reviled a conglomerate as New Corp., as his next target.

Remember the advice given by the White Mouse of WW2 "Watch your politicians - you can loose your freedom so easily". What is of concern is the longer one waits to regain free speech and democracy the more difficult it will become to regain what we have all lost? With Wikileaks we have now reached "critical mass"? We looked up "Freedom" in Google - lots of really excellent definitions including one by Mr Malcolm Fraser â??Too much secrecy inhibits peoples capacity to judge the Governmentâ??s performanceâ? but sadly there is so little of it left! "New Zealand born Nancy Wake AC GM was the most decorated service woman among Allied troops in WWII. She grew up in Australia and worked as a nurse and then as a journalist. As a journalist she watched the rise of Hitler. The Gestapo called her the "White Mouse" and she became the most wanted spy. Interesting piece Julian. I am sorry to hear about threats to your family. One thing that I find curious, however, is whether you feel it is important to publish material simply because it is secret? Is it media's job to reveal the truth when the truth is secret simply because it was kept secret? Aren't there some instances (foreign diplomatic talks for example) where discretion is integral? Thank you.

What you write may well be true, but most of the western world sleeps relatively safely largely due to actions of the US. The means justifies the ends. In la-la land, we can debate the ethics and means. In civilian land, we donâ??t have to make the decisions that keep us safe, and I am thankful for that. Tear down the US and I fear what kind of world we will live in. You hide behind law, and rightly so. The threats the US and their allies fight generally do not abide by the same rules of law and engagement that the US has to combat against. When will you release leaks revealing the internal machinations of the Taliban, al-Qa'ida, China, Iran etc? Where's the global balance in your journalism? Hate the US State Department all you like, but your claims of martyrdom and pursuit of truth are disingenuous and thinly veiled self aggrandisement.

This column is a wake-up call to Ausralian Liberal, National, Labor, Green and Independent MPs. Assange may be many things but he has a largely unblemished track record of telling the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it is to government, military, diplomats or the general public. New media is entitled to the same freedoms as old media, and the receipt and publication of material leaked to the media is not a crime by any Western democracy's standards. Politicians attempting to curtail the fundamental rights and freedoms of their own citizens do so at their peril.

People should not buy into the image of Assange as an advocate of free speech and transparency. I support the idea of whistleblowers; if there is corruption, criminal activity, or info about JFK or ET life, then I say release the files. But what Assange has done is NOT in the interests of humanity. Some things should be kept secret, like diplomacy behind closed doors. What purpose was served by letting North Korea know that it's ONLY ally in the world thought of it as a "spoiled child," and supported the idea of regime change with the South in charge? Kim Jong-Il is paranoid to begin with. If he feels isolated and threatened, he could (and yet may) start a firestorm in the region. What purpose was served by letting Iran know that not only are the US and Israel intent on shutting down it's nuke program; but so are it's fellow gulf-state Muslim countries. If Ahmedinijad didn't feel threatened before, he does now; He'd be an idiot NOT to pursue the bomb. Count Iran as a 2nd theater of increased tension thanks to Assange. Finally, releasing a list of critical US facilities? No lies, no coverups, just new targets for terrorists. Sorry folks. Assange is not what he's made out to be.

Mr. Assange, I agree with you in principle. The onis should always be on the side of truth, rather than secrecy and I think this is absolutely a noble goal. However, I do take issue with a few of your points as should anybody who is interested in real journalism or "the truth". You say that you are not anti-war, except in regard to those wars that you do not agree with. You've already made a value judgement that these wars are not worth fighting and that, presumably, they are worthy of such harsh focus. That is the problem in a nutshell. You claim to be about "the truth", but obviously you seek to emphasise wrongdoing (or perceived wrongdoing) where you have a particular subjective interest. In doing so, you publish thousands of pages of classified documents without providing the appropriate context. I think you need to distinguish between legitimate sinister "cover-ups" and reasonable cases of security and privacy. Just think about court cases where a victim's name can not be revealed for their own protection. We generally don't insist that courts reveal such information as a matter of truth-seeking, because we understand that the context matters - balance is required.

His statements often reveal his intentions. His goal is less about transparency, and more trying to make punish those he disagrees with. There was nothing valid in the "vital target" cable released recently. And trying to call that "diplomatic spying" is a weak connection, he knows that. So that really leaves only one other conclusion.

The media is a powerful medium, and a potentially dangerous tool. What WikiLinks has accomplished is tantamount to the lancing of a festering boil. Julian Assange is being scapegoated. What he has done through WikiLinks has been to draw attention to the fact that governments are dealing in underhanded ways with the people they are supposed to represent. Everyone already knew this. WikiLinks simply has given us proof. They have done many people a great service. This is hardly a terrorist act. To label it so is a desperate act of self-serving fear-mongering. The Australian government has a duty to defend the rights of Juian Assange. It remains to be seen if our government can rise above the amoral morass that politics has degenerated into and behave decently. Our current government does not have a great track record on upholding human rights, but the spotlight is now on them. A spotlight WikiLinks turned on. And all politicians love a spotlight. With luck, and the overwhelming pressure of popular support the people hold for Julian Assange, our government may yet come out of this fray doing what is right. Supporting the rights of Julian Assange. Anything less is shamefully negligent.

Assange is correct. It is the duty of all free people to demand transparency by our governments and a free unrestricted press. We are allowing governments to manipulate the discussion in their best interests; not the peoples. If thet are embarrassed by the disclosures they should change their behavior. I'm incredibly impressed by the work WikiLeaks has been doing. In the face of intense government and corporate pressure, they've done journalism that shames the efforts of most established media outlets. The intense attacks on WikiLeaks are attacks on freedom of the press driven by the normally unaccountable elite. All Australians can by justifiably proud of what Mr. Assange and WikiLeaks have accomplished.

The concerted attack on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks by the US and Australian Governments is remarkable for one thing in particular. He has not been charged with any crime. There is no warrant for his arrest in relation to any offence committed by WikiLeaks, anywhere in the world. This is a simple fact. Can anyone tell us what laws he has supposedly broken? Governments have been exposed to embarrassment and humiliation by their own words, that is all. The rest of us have been enlightened about what Governments have been doing and saying on our behalf. The words appearing on WikiLeaks did not come from Julian Assange or WikiLeaks. They are the words of our own Government. If using these words is criminal then they should press charges against Assange. Of course if they do that, they will also have to press charges against their own people, because they not only wrote all this stuff in the first place, but they also leaked it. So Prime MInister, what exactly is our Attorney General doing? When will he be announcing charges against Assange? If no charges are to be laid against him, then what is all this about?

The next worry is rendition. The US cannot be trusted. Australia must insist that Australian citizens are treated within the law. The Labor government will suffer terminal decline if they forsake Julian Assange. They will be no better than Howard who forsook Australian citizens to the US for torture and rendition. Keith Murdoch did not reveail classified information. Wikileaks has. Keith Murdoch saved lives, the information wikileaks revealed will cost lives. They are criminals. Not patriots, not journalists, not working for the public good. They need to go to jail. I beleive in a free, unhindered press. But the country needs to protect some information. The government decides what info needs to be protected, not some hack web site.

In a recent debate on the Afghan campaign in the English parliament less than half of the elected and sitting MPs were present to debate the issue of troops withdrawal. If Wikileaks has achieved nothing else it is getting politicians and the public to discuss the ramifications of this on-going occupation which has appeared to achieve very little except on-going allied casualties and a seemingly corrupt government. Sarah Palin is certainly misusing her position to call for the hunting down of Assange, and Julia Gillard looks naive and foolish for joining the rabble baying for the blood of an Australian citizen.

I am proud of Julian's actions and feel he is being let down badly by our Government. How dare any democratic nation assume the right to murder anyone let alone a foreign national. We need to hear the truth of what transpires behind the shroud of diplomacy, especially if our young men and women are putting their lives on the line in a war. Stealing classified documents, receiving stolen documents, and publishing them is ILLEGAL! The Supreme Court and the US Constitution allows for the press to procure unclassified documents and other documents through the Freedom of Information Act. So regardless of FALSE claims by so-called journalists and radical news organizations, protecting classified documents is LEGAL and PROPER.

most of us know governments now operate in almost impenetrable secrecy and the issues in negotiation, events and underlying agressions against each other are continually obsfucated, omitted or outright denied and controlled by powerful corporate media comprised of individuals who need to keep their jobs(or more importantly, stay alive). However, when the citizens have access to raw documents, the awful truth can sometimes, henceforth, set them free to form their own opinion - make their own choices. Which is the real purpose of a democracy, is it not?

This is not freedom of speech or freedom of the press...this is an individual, in possession of stolen material, obtained via espionage, recklessly releasing it to the world. I say arrest, him and anyone associated with the the wikileaks organization and hold them responsible for the damage done. This is not to say that some good will come of the release of information. He is a thief, a fence, and involved in espionage. There is nothing honorable in what he has done.

Julian Assange should be nominated for Australian of the year and awarded the nobel peace prize. For too long corrupot governments have colluded in mass deception of the public - hiding their atrocities through mass manipulation of the media and their own citizens. The fact that prominent US politicians and the like have called for his assassination, and that our very own PM is not publicly condemning this is a testatamant to the crumbling nature of our democracy. Fascinating. There's an old adage about accountants and ethics: if you don't mind seeing your story on the front page of a national newspaper then you're behaving ethically. There's nothing wrong with wanting to keep things confidential but remember governments work for us; if things are said or done that cannot be aired publicly in one's own lifetime then perhaps they should never be said or done.

There, Hitler attended a Catholic school located in an 11th-century Benedictine cloister whose walls were engraved in a number of places with crests containing the symbol of the swastika. In 1898, the family returned permanently to Leonding.
His younger brother Edmund died of measles on 2 February 1900, causing permanent changes in Hitler. He went from a confident, outgoing boy who found school easy, to a morose, detached, sullen boy who constantly battled his father and his teachers.
Hitler was close to his mother, but had a troubled relationship with his tradition-minded authoritarian father, who frequently beat him, especially in the years after Alois's retirement and disappointed farming efforts. Alois wanted his son to follow in his footsteps as an Austrian customs official, and this became a huge source of conflict between them. Despite his son's pleas to go to classical high school and become an artist, his father would not budge and sent him to the technical high school in the city of Linz in September 1900. Hitler rebelled, and, in Mein Kampf confessed to failing his first year in hopes that once his father saw "what little progress I was making at the technical school he would let me devote myself to the happiness I dreamed of." But Alois never relented and Hitler became even more bitter and rebellious.
For young Hitler, German Nationalism quickly became an obsession, and a way to rebel against his father, who proudly served theAustrian government. Most people that lived along the German-Austrian border considered themselves German-Austrians, but Hitler expressed loyalty only to Germany. In defiance of the Austrian Monarchy, and his father who continually expressed loyalty to it, Hitler and his young friends liked to use the German greeting, "Heil," and sing the German anthem "Deutschland Über Alles," instead of theAustrian Imperial anthem.
After Alois' sudden death on 3 January 1903, Hitler's behavior at the technical school became even more disruptive, and he was asked to leave. He enrolled at the Realschule in Steyr in 1904, but upon completing his second year, he and his friends went out for a night of celebration and drinking, and an intoxicated Hitler tore his school certificate into four pieces and used it as toilet paper. When someone turned the stained certificate in to the school's director, he “... gave him such a dressing-down that the boy was reduced to shivering jelly. It was probably the most painful and humiliating experience of his life.” Adolph Hitler was expelled, and never to return to school again.
Hitler became a Christian at age 15. He was confirmed on Whitsunday, 22 May 1904 at the Linz Cathedral. His sponsor was Emanuel Lugert, a friend of his late father.

The opposing sides were to be armed and incidents were to be provided in order for them to: fight amongst themselves; destroy national governments; destroy religious institutions; and eventually destroy each other.
Weishaupt soon infiltrates the Continental Order of Freemasons with this Illuminati doctrine and establishes lodges of the Grand Orient to be their secret headquarters. Weishaupt also recruits 2,000 paid followers including the most intelligent men in the field of arts and letters, education, science, finance,and industry. They were instructed to follow the following methods in order to control people.
1) Use monetary and sex bribery to obtain control of men already in high places, in the various levels of all governments and other fields of endeavour. Once influential persons had fallen for the lies, deceits, and temptations of the Illuminati they were to be held in bondage by application of political and other forms of blackmail, threats of financial ruin, public exposure, and fiscal harm, even death to themselves and loved members of their families.
2) The faculties of colleges and universities were to cultivate students possessing exceptional mental ability belonging to well-bred families with international leanings, and recommend them for special training in internationalism, or rather the notion that only a one-world government can put an end to recurring wars and strife. Such training was to be provided by granting scholarships to those selected by the Illuminati.
3) All influential people trapped into coming under the control of the Illuminati, plus the students who had been specially educated and trained, were to be used as agents and placed behind the scenes of all governments as experts and specialists. This was so they would advise the top executives to adopt policies which would in the long-run serve the secret plans of the Illuminati one-world conspiracy and bring about the destruction of the governments and religions they were elected or appointed to serve.
4) To obtain absolute-control of the press, at that time the only mass-communications media which distributed information to the public, so that all news and information could be slanted in order to make the masses believe that a one-world government is the only solution to our many and varied problems.
1913: On March 4, Woodrow Wilson is elected the 28th President of the United States. President Wilson does not have the money, so Untermyer volunteers to pay the $40,000 out of his own pocket to the woman Wilson had had the affair with, on the condition that Wilson promise to appoint to the first vacancy on the United States Supreme Court a nominee to be recommended to President Wilson by Untermyer. Wilson agrees to this.
Jacob Schiff sets up the Anti Defamation League (ADL) in the United States. This organisation is formed to slander anyone who questions or challenges the Rothschild global conspiracy as, "anti-semitic."
Strangely enough, the same year that they do this they also set up their last and current central bank in America, the Federal Reserve. Congressman Charles Lindbergh stated following the passing of the Federal Reserve Act on December 23,
